CHAPTER THIRTY ONE

The sky had cleared slightly when O’Reilly went outside but the sunshine did little to lift his spirits. Even though Superintendent Hayes had pledged her full support O’Reilly was furious at the attitude displayed by the man who was supposed to be in charge of maintaining law and order on the island. It appeared that the privileged few were able to play by different rules where the law was concerned.

The class of ’89 reunion was here with a vengeance. The reception dinner was due to start in a few hours and even though the teams tasked with providing the security for the event had assured them the guests were safe, O’Reilly didn’t believe that for one second. It was only a matter of time before someone else in the class of ’89 ended up dead. He looked up at the sky, let out a long sigh and went back inside the station.

He’d called a briefing, but he wasn’t quite sure how to proceed. They had two dead men and a Wolf Pack – that was it. Nobody they’d spoken to had provided them with any clues as to why Malcolm Eggert and David Logan were killed, and nobody could give them any answers as to what the Wolf Pack could mean.

“I’m wide open to any suggestions any of you have,” O’Reilly began. “I don’t mind admitting this one has me a bit stumped. Anything?”

DC Owen nodded. “This is clearly about something that happened in 1989.”

“That’s pretty obvious,” DC Stone said.

“I think we might have overlooked something,” DC Owen continued. “We’ve been concentrating on the men and women who attended the Queen Elizabeth College in that year, but what if we were to spread the net further out?”

“I have no idea what you’re on about,” DC Stone said.

“We’ve neglected to look any further than the school.”

“Katie Owen,” O’Reilly said. “You are absolutely right. We’ve been so focused on the school itself we haven’t even stopped to think this could be about something else entirely.”

“What are you suggesting?” DS Skinner asked.

“Archives,” DC Owen said.

“Something happened in 1989,” O’Reilly said. “And we haven’t even started to look past the school. Will, I want you, Katie and Andy to go through 1989 with a fine-toothed comb. I want to know about anything unusual that happened in that year.”

“Unusual?” DC Stone said.

“Something that sticks out. Something that strikes you as suspicious. Mysterious deaths and the like.”

“And missing persons,” DC Owen added.

“Good thinking, Katie. Check the records and see if there were any incidents that weren’t cleared up. I don’t know how the Island Police operated in the late eighties but I suspect things have changed quite a bit.”

“We should speak to my dad,” DC Owen suggested.

“DI Owen?” DS Skinner said.

Tony Owen had retired from the Island Police just over a year ago. He’d been forced into early retirement due to a heart condition. O’Reilly had replaced him as DI.

“My dad started working for the Island Police in 1987,” DC Owen told them. “He might be able to help us.
